News Alert: Sky is Not Falling on Alberta Housing Market

Alberta’s economy is always full of surprises and few people understand that volatility better than CHBA – Alberta members. As the chart of last decade’s housing starts shows, our industry has its ups and downs but always adjusts to fluctuating demand.
Your provincial association cannot control economic fundamentals but we are in a position to counter the alarmist tone of news coverage that undermines consumer confidence. Reports by Economic Analyst Richard Goatcher are regularly quoted in news stories and discussed in columns along with forecasts by the big banks. His analysis helps get the word out that the sky is not falling.  His recent presentations to HBAs and regular market reports on our website provide members with timely economic data to help you make informed decisions.
CHBA – Alberta can see a silver lining in the clouds of economic uncertainty – a fresh opportunity to highlight the $17.9 billion economic impact from residential construction and the 125,000 jobs that investment creates. Watch this spring for updated impact numbers that will help members show that home building and renovation are key contributors to the economy of every Alberta city. That’s a timely message that tends to be drowned out when the energy sector is booming and the media is focused on labour shortages at Tim Horton’s.

Jim Rivait, CEO, CHBA – Alberta
